I should go ahead and get this one started again.
In my quest to watch all of Gundam, I ran into my first actual new thing and sat and saw Thunderbolt all the way through. Hmm. it's.....hmm. I'll save my complete thoughts for later, but my initial raised expectations about it reminding me of 08th MS Team ended up not being wrong, just not in the way I hoped.
Voltron: Legendary Defender on Netflix is good. Very good. It's made by a few of the same people who worked on Avatar and Korra, and it shows. It's very well made and the writing is pretty good, it's got the silly goofy jokes and humor but has some fairly impressive drama and story beats between the characters and in the setting. It definitely does a lot of diferent things with the characters, like how Sven is now named Shiro (being the name of one of the guy's in GoLion, the show Voltron was dubbed from) and Allura is no longer a Lion pilot, though she pilots something else, but it all makes a lot o sense, and I appreciate ho it doesn't feel the need to be shackled to what came before while still holding true to the spirit of the old show. Best way to put it - this is the show you remember watching when you were a kid, as opposed to what the old show actually turns out to be when you watch it as an adult. And frankly, the combination sequence got this mecha fan a little pleased by the GaoGaiGar shout out.
Watching the second season of Arslan as it airs on simulcast. Same as I said before about the first season, it's actually sort of bland, but it's good enough, and I just had a hankering for swords and sandals, and it fills the void well. I'm a little concerned by how it's turning out there's actual magic going on though, but we'll see.
Transformers: Combiner Wars is freaking terrible. Ugh. Nothing makes sense, and articles calling it "The Game of Thrones of Robot animation" make me wonder if the person is trolling us or is just insane. It's stupid, it's inane, the characters are completely off base and random, and nothing makes sense, whether you compare it to past incarnations or take it on its own. The voice actors are all doing a well enough job, but the writing is atrocious, and given that the Michael Bay movies are part of this franchise, that's saying something. I cannot fathom anyone finding this good, even people who only ever saw Generation 1 and nothing else, it's just that bad. The worst part is that it may well drag the idea of making a series for older viewers down in flames with it, which is a shame, since Prime from a couple years ago was very good. Older fans should just stick to the IDW comics, those are actually good.
Going through the second season of Star Wars Rebels, and I've been impressed by how it's managed to turn me into a fan since I was disappointed that it replaced Clone Wars. I think having the more focused season long arc is helping them stay on track, since the problem with the previous show was that while I thought it was good, it was trying to cover such a wide range of plots and characters, when it got to anything involving Padme trying to play politics it just started to meander and get dull. This show also finally gave Darth Vader his menace back, there is definitely an "Oh shit" feeling when he appears on screen, and quite appropriately, the main characters get absolutely destroyed if they even bother trying to fight instead of run. I was also really glad that Ashoka came back, though I'm getting a bad feeling about her fate at the end of this season when she and Vader inevitably have their duel.
Oh yeah, and for something not animated, Ash vs Evil Dead is great. It's schlocky and corny as heck, but it's perfect. Shame they can't directly mention or reference Army of Darkness, but it's pretty much exactly the show I'd expect out of an old Ash still having to deal with the same old crap again.
