AKA: HOW TO DO STUFF
So, we’ve all moved into the New LA. You’ll note that a lot of features are different. They’re new. They’re scary. They’re not the same. Change is BAD!
Yes. But here are some ways to make things more like “home.”
--------------------------------
1. User Name vs. Display Name
You've got two names on New LA: Your user name and your display name.
Your USER NAME must fit within ProBoards pretty strict guidelines. No capitals, no fancy stuff, no shenanigans. This is because your user name has to be formatted to comply with ProBoard's database. Your user name won't be displayed here on the forums if you select a custom display name -- the user name is more of a back-end administration thing.
Your DISPLAY NAME can be changed at any time in your profile. Hurray! You no longer have to bother the admins to change your name! The display name will appear all over the forum. It'll be the name people see in all your posts and in the member list.
To change your display name: Edit Profile > Personal > Display Name.
It's kinda like how Old LA worked, where you had a log-in name and a display name --- but you have more direct control of it here.
2. Custom Titles
You can also change this on your own now! No post count required. It does require a slight workaround, though.
Your "personal status" appears in the same location as Old LA's member titles: Right next to your avatar. So, we can essentially use that to update our member titles.
Go to your profile.
Put your desired tittle in the blank status update box ("enter your message here").
Click update status.
This will now appear next to your avatar in all posts. Please only use a couple words to avoid using excessive space.
3. Change Forum Skins
No more dropdown menu on the bottom of the forum index. On ProBoards, you change your skin choice by editing your profile.
Edit Profile > Settings > Forum Theme. All skins will be available from that dropdown menu.
4. Add Your Original Join Date
Original join dates are a custom field in your profile settings. It’s near the bottom of the “personal” tab.
Edit Profile > Personal > Original Join Date
5. Save Your Draft Posts!
To avoid losing your entire post if you accidentally navigate away or something crashes, you can enable saved drafts.
Edit Profile > Settings > Enable Drafts
6. Sorry, No Big-Ass Personal Pages
The days of putting a lot of shit on your personal bio page is over, unfortunately. You can add a bunch of text into the "biography" section of your profile, but no media. Forum software just isn't geared to do that.
7. Signatures
You can still add images to signatures, but you've got to use BBCode to do it. Your image will have to be linked from elsewhere (like Photobucket). Example:
[*img]http://image.url.here[/*img] One image per image tag.
You can enable/disable viewing everyone's signatures in your profile settings.
8. Attachment Limits
You can add attachments, but no bigger than 1MB (to save on bandwidth). Otherwise, you'll have to use an off-site link.
9. Spoiler Tags
Work exactly like Old LA. [*spoiler]A terrible secret.[*/spoiler]
(to be updated with more FAQs and information)
Feel free to ask more stuff. A lot has changed, so even I'm not sure where to start with this.
