I have always been a huge fan of Chrono Trigger, and recently I heard of this new game called I am setsuna. Apparently it has the same battle system and is inspired by it, but isnt directly related to Chrono Trigger at all. I have yet to play it. What are your guys thoughts on it?
Here's the trailer:

I am pretty much in the same boat you are. It is on my long list of games to play at some point.

I'd be super careful going into it expecting Chrono Trigger. The combat system is definitely directly inspired/lifted, but the game itself is an extremely different beast. It's a very melancholic, serious game set in an appropriately snowy, cold world, and the tone is completely different from CT's quirky, funny and serious story. The music so far also seems to be exclusively piano based, which fits very well, but it's a far cry from the other game's varied sounds and music.
That said, it seems okay so far, but I know some people don't really like the atmosphere and tone. It's not so much Japanese melodrama so much as it's just a quest with a march towards inevitability, even if it (might) do the JRPG thing where they find a way to make it all better, though I can't help but think this'll have a bittersweet ending at best.
