...is a pretty damn charming game. It is very much a simplified X-Com like we were expecting, but it is also absolutely NOT "My First X-COM" either. It's kinda weird how it starts off really hand holdy like you might expect, but then it suddenly switches gears and just starts giving you mechanics and abilities without really any tutorials. Like, it's stuff like "You can now push blocks!" and other self explanatory stuff, but it's a weird, marked shift from how they carefully doled out other mechanics and stuff right before. I really love how it feels like this game was made by people who LOVE Mario and the Mushroom Kingdom, but at the same time aren't Nintendo employees. They clearly grew up asking the same random questions other fans do (Is there a main guy named Toad amongst all the Toads, or are they all just interchangeable?), and they're just removed enough from the property while still holding it dear that they do things that Nintendo itself wouldn't. Case in point, the game being the type of game it is. I'm also a bit surprised by how the tone is pretty true to the Mario series, but they get away with - and are allowed to get away with - doing just a bit over the edge that it's odd. Like, the word Hell is in the game, which isn't a big deal, but also not something you'd ever believe would be in there. The Rabbids also fit in a lot better then I thought, mostly because they're regarded as being annoying idiots by everyone and the game itself, with Mario and everyone sort of just barely tolerating or being amused by them in order to deal with the crisis at hand.
The game though, gets kinda brutal. Like, it starts off easy and has a slow gentle difficulty curve, but in chapter two things start to get a bit more difficult. By Chapter three, holy crap the game gets vicious, and I'm not saying it's a bad thing, but it kinda just spikes out of nowhere - this definitely is not just an easier X-COM, simplified or not. It's fun! It's a surprisingly good game, even going in looking forward to it. Anyone else playing?
