With a new Zelda game coming out, it's time to rank games before our ratings all get disrupted. Time for Zelda Top Whatevers.
Top Gameplay: Link to the Past because no matter what's come along, this is how I'll always remember Zelda.
Top Art Style: Wind Waker. It holds up incredibly well and really shines in HD. Forget the haters, this one is timeless.
Top Story: Majora's Mask. It's the most unique and the darkest and the most intricate.
Top Nostalgia: LttP again.
Top Disappointment: Skyward Sword
Top Tour Guide: Midna
Top Soundtrack: Hyrule Warriors \m/
Top NPC: Tingle
Top Ganon: Four Swords Adventure. I love mode-locked Ganon, and he came out swinging his trident like a boss.
Top Handheld Zelda: Link Between Worlds because it was everything good about the series.
Top Zelda: Tetra
Top Ganon Death: Wind Waker for the sword to the face
Top Overworld: Zelda 1 for all the secrets and exploration rewards

Top 2D Game: A Link to the Past. I may like Zelda II more, but I acknowledge ALttP as the better game.
Top 3D Game: The Wind Waker. Ocarina of Time and Twilight Princess are more robust games, but Wind Waker never feels as tedious.
Top Gameplay: Zelda 2. I say this because it has the deepest combat of any other game. Other ones would have great and intricate puzzles, but this ones is at the top when it comes to pure combat.
Top Art Style: The Wind Waker. The HD remake was almost unnecessary.
Top Story: Link's Awakening. It's a bit simpler than Majora's Mask, but it feels more intimate since the story is more focused on Link than it is in Majora's Mask.
Top Nostalgia: A Link to the Past.
Top Disappointment: Spirit Tracks. I condemn this one because we already knew Phantom Hourglass was a flaming wastepile of crap. Why make another?
Top Tour Guide: King of Red Lions. Dude is just cool and he had the best secondary use.
Top Soundtrack: Wind Waker. There's just a lot of tunes in this one to enjoy.
Top NPC: Groose. But only because Tingle isn't an NPC anymore.
Top Handheld Zelda: A Link Between Worlds
Top Ganon Battle: Twilight Princess gave us a four stage Ganon fight to make sure we got to fight him in every possible way possible.
Top Overworld: Twilight Princess. It's a little tedious and I wish the areas flowed seamlessly together, but it's all organized very intelligently and they took every opportunity to link areas together. Everything feels a lot more interconnected in a very smart way, which is not the case in the other 3D games. If the HD remake had made the entire overworld seamless, it would've been perfect and very likely resembled something more like an open world.
Top Spinoff: Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland. But Hyrule Warriors comes very, very close.
Top Ganon: Hyrule Warriors. That mane of his is legendary.
Top Link: I personally find the Oracles design of Link to be the best. This is also the same Link as the one in ALttP and LA, so he's a certified badass.
Top Zelda: Tetra, though Skyward Sword Zelda was the most invested I ever got with her character.
Top Non-Ganon: Ghirahim, because he's simply a lot more memorable than any of the other baddies we've got.
Top Opening: Majora's Mask. It's so atmpospheric compared to the typical "Link wakes up, lol he's so lazy".
Top Ending: A Link to the Past. Everything is better now!
Top Item: Double Clawshots. Some of the puzzles got tedious, but it introduces a lot of very interesting mechanics by simply doubling up an existing item.
Top Transformation: Goron Link is insanely fun to roll around as.
Top Non-Ganon Boss Fight: Stallord. It's an easy fight, but riding around that huge pillar is just so damn cool.
Top List Of Top Zelda Things: Masa's list, obviously.

Top Gameplay: Ocarina for 3D Zelda, Link to the Past for 2D. Two different paradigms, but if you put a gun to my head Link to the Past wins because of the fun inventory.
Top Art Style: Majora's Mask. Ocarina of Time had a good, if not bold style. MM took it and added several buckets of atmosphere and character.
Top Story: Wind Waker. Beyond the cartoon exterior is a meaningful tale of letting go of the past and daring to look to the future.
Top Nostalgia: Ocarina of Time. The first and third game defined Zelda in their own way - this time the definition stuck.
Top Disappointment: Phantom Hourglass. Neat characters, neat world, but too tied up in the touch-screen gameplay and repetitive dungeon.
Top Tour Guide: Midna. Is there even another option?
Top Soundtrack: Majora's Mask.
Top NPC: Marin.
Top Ganon: Twilight Princess. From possessing Zelda to the final duel, he marks all the boxes except "trident wielding."
Top Handheld Zelda: Link's Awakening. Simple, quirky and charming - few games have ever been so well matched to their console as this one and the original GB.
Top Zelda: Spirit Tracks Zelda. She's involved in the story, acts as a guide and is kinda-sorta playable. A stepping stone to the larger role I hope she one day plays in the series.
Top Ganon Death: Legend of Zelda. He combusts. And you claim your trophy from his ashes. How much more badass can you get in 8 bits?
Top Overworld: Link to the Past. Two worlds, lots of varied environments, and plenty to discover.
