Dark secret time. I actually kind of liked Sticker Star. It had plenty of flaws, sure, and I missed the removal of the RPG mechanics, but it was still more enjoyable that Super Paper Mario for me. So when I read the reports that Color Splash was slightly better than Sticker Star, I figured it was a safe pick.
So I'm like two hours in at this point and man, it is losing me.
1. The combat mechanics, with the choosing and the painting and the flicking are such a slog, even without the touch controls. It also suffers from a classic misuse of the Gamepad, which is to arbitrarily put portions of the game down there just to make me look at the second screen. I should WANT to look at the second screen, not be transferred there. Also, is it just me, or are the timed hits weird? I should bring Paper Jam back out and see if I can still rock a combo, because in this game, I am flubbing timed hits left and right, especially with the jumps. And making the combat a little frustrating on top of tedious, unnecessary, and resource-intensive just makes the whole thing unrewarding.
2. The pathfinding is really tough. I am just not in sync the developers on this one. I'm having a really hard time identifying cutout points, for example, and have resorted to a guide way more often than I should have for being 2 hours into the game. Maybe it's the cold making me stupid, but I am definitely not reading the screen.
Also, the cutout thing is dumb and another excuse to make me play with the touch screen in a way that isn't all that fun.
3. On the bright side, the writing and art have been really good. I do wish I was motivated to experience more of it.
So I don't know. This game just isn't doing it for me thus far. Has anyone had a better experience and would care to defend it?
