The admin staff got an unexpected email from davogones today. If you don't remember, davo was the guy who mostly ran Zelda Legends and part of the forums way back when.
He's willing to move LA onto his personal server.
We can:
1) Keep Old LA. It'll just have some extra ads to bring in server revenue. LA will get a new license key and receive regular updates. We stay on IPB and don't lose any old posts / etc. New LA (this forum) is deleted. Davogones foots the bill, possibly with us chipping in every now and again.
2) We Archive Old LA. It becomes a read-only archive that members can look at whenever. Old posts preserved. Davogones likely won't need to get a new license key or spend any extra time maintaining it. Minimal effort on his part. We'd have to ask him if he's willing to do this, though, since he was mostly looking at option 1.
3) Sayonara Sucker. Old LA is entirely deleted and we start over here from scratch; no history, but also no baggage or relics. Davo won't have to do anything. We use New LA exclusively.
What do you guys think? The admins are pretty torn. Some of us like the idea of starting with a blank slate, given the new direction we want to head in. I admittedly like the idea of a New LA. I never look through old threads as it is, so I don't mind losing all the old posts.
But staying with Old LA also means no learning curves, no changes, and a somewhat more robust admin control panel that gives us some more options. That is appealing.
Davogones is around more than Khuff, but we're still on somebody's personal server rather than a third party one -- so that's something to consider to. If something goes wrong, we'll still need davo to help us out. Which he will, but it's still an extra step.

Hm. Could we.....like........idk, just, throw all the posts currently on Old LA into the archive, make the archive only accessible to *current* members (like shove us all into an invisible member group or something), and sort of start fresh on Old LA?
Cuz I'm sort of torn on this too. I want to keep Old LA because memories and FEELINGS but, I was actually sort of looking forward to not having decade-old posts of mine readily available to any old shmuck who signed up. I do definitely like IPB better than this forum though.

I'm for option 2. Keep the memories but start with a clean slate. Good excuse for us to refresh LA, create new sections or specialties, but still be able to point out old dumb inside jokes.

I do definitely like IPB better than this forum though. We can definitely archive all the stuff on Old LA and start over with the appearance of a blank slate, yes. Making it accessible to current members ONLY is a bit of an issue, though -- it means a specialized member group that we'd have to personally go through and put people into; along with equivalent new groups for all ranks (Old Mod vs. Newbie Mod, Old Admin vs. Punkass Rookie Admin, etc.). Multiple overlaying member groups can get complicated fast, especially if you have to make a lot of edits fast -- like for a JRP Special Event or some other forum game. So, we can archive everything and start with fresh forums, but everybody's still gonna be able to see the old stuff. Including new people. Archiving Old LA as-is and leaving it there untouched (option 2)? Then yes. I can completely lock it down so that only current members can see it. No guests. New accounts would be forbidden.

Could just put a password on the archive... I think? Didn't we have that on the dorms?

Oh, yes, that is an option too. Could make it so only the current members have the password. Less hassle.

Oh yeah, I forgot about passwords. That'd be even better.

I'm in favour of Option 2 as well, for the same reasons that Rova gave.

It honestly depends on how much we're really into this whole Legends Alliance project we've been coalescing around. If that's something we're still all on board with, then we might as well 2 or 3. If we're just content to have continuity and not worry about all that, then me may as well preserve what we can.

Throwing my hat in for Option 2 as well. This way we have Old LA readily accessible, and if we need to fetch something from it for the new forums we can just pull it out of the archive.

Option 2 really does sound like the best of all worlds, assuming Dave is on board with it. Having the old stuff available, but members-only locked and less search-enginey sounds pretty great.

Option 2 for sure. I think a refresh would be good for the community, and the new boards have been growing on me. Any option to preserve the old boards would definitely be desirable, though I don't really care if their publicly archived or privately, just so long as we can still access them.

I'll go for option 2 or 3. I like making fresh starts, with nothing of the "old life" hanging around. I'm in for any of it.

You mean I don't have to keep struggling with this forum scraper? YAY!
(Seriously, even though I do have a program which could archive LA in theory...it turned out to be a giant mess. ANYTHING is better, especially this.)
All three options are good in my opinion, but my boat is option 2, as well. It's low traffic for Davogones, and if the private server crashes...it's just an archive. Sad to lose the content, but it's not the end of the world.
My second choice would be option #1: keeping the content is ideal. If it ever turns into more of a hassle than it's worth I'm of course open to dumping it, but I think we should at least try to keep the archive.

After sleeping on it, I definitely prefer options 2 or 3. I like having a clean slate and I like having more direct control over ownership of LA. Davo should probably focus most of his attention on keeping Zelda Legends running.
The admins will reply to him and ask if he's willing to host LA in archive format. Or, if he wants, archive most of it and leave the Zelda sections open (since that was his whole stake in LA anyway).
'Cause hosting isn't really an issue, but IPB's software costs money -- either $30/month or $170+ flat fee if you host yourself. So.... yeah. I don't want him to unless he feels it's really no problem.
